Trees and park bench victims of vandalism
A sugar maple planted in Nicollet Island Park as part of a University of Minnesota forestry experiment is the apparent victim of recent vandalism. Its trunk was completely snapped at its base.
A nearby park bench also suffered an apparent act of vandalism, its seat smashed into splinters. Close to the bench, another tree from the 2000 U of M planting had a branch that appeared to have been bent to the breaking point.
All are on the public parkland (with tennis courts and a grassy meadow) at Grove Street and East Island Avenue where DeLaSalle High School hopes to build a football stadium.
If you have any information about these incidents or observe other vandalism to park property and natural resources, contact the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board's police or forestry departments.
